AWAKENING A REAL LIWE FESTIVAL: EBUTE-IGA IS A CENTRE OF TOURISM

12th of February, 2017, was a day that the people of Ebute-Iga in Ikorodu division will not forget in a hurry. The day when all sons and daughters of the ancient town gathered to celebrate the Liwe Festival. The community which is said to be rich in cultural festivities that usually unite all Indigenes and residents of that ancient town.

According to the Alashe Liwe of Ebute-Iga Kingdom, Chief Abiola Kosoko, when speaking with Igbogbo/Bayeku Info Magazine, the Liwe Festival had been in existence for over 500 years at Ebute Iga, while from there, later taken to Ikorodu town over 200 years ago. He also established that Ebute-Iga is a community dominated by the Aworis while Ipakodo is being occupied by the Ijebus.

One good thing about Ikorodu Division is that culture and traditions are taken at the high esteem. Art and culture are adequately preserved to foster harmony, peace, and unity in the society and for the posterity. This also reflected in the celebration of Liwe Festival as it's usher in a good season for Ikorodu Division and Lagos waterways. Apart from this year festival that was celebrated in a big way, Liwe Festival in Ebute-Iga is usually celebrated yearly and is meant to promote peace, progress, wade off calamity and tragedy on the road and in water. It is also done to solve some other spiritual problems that may threaten the lives and the economy of the division.

It was an historic welcome when those that went for five hours on water to bring what will be used to appease the deities arrived, an unimaginable crowd were gathered to receive them, while people were singing and dancing.

No doubt that the current Alashe of Ebute-Iga, Chief Abiola Kosoko, who was installed three months ago after the former Alashe was said to have joined his ancestors 43 years ago, have made good history for himself for resuscitating the cultural heritage of Ebute-Iga Kingdom.

Among the dignitaries that graced the occasion were the Regent of Ipakodo, Aro of Ipakodo, the Baale of Ogolonto and Nigeria Nollyhood stars. Also at the event were former SSA on Education, Lagos State, Otunba Saheed Ibikunle, House of Representatives aspirant, Hon Owolabi Anifowose, among others.
