Governor Ambode, who spoke through the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello at the launch of the Lagos State Digital Library held at the Landmark Event Center, Victoria Island, said the unveiling of the first of its kind digital Library was part of the vision of providing access to education.

According to the Governor, the access envisioned would be through collection and curation of digital content by online portal.

He said that the development, apart from complementing the quest for achieving Lagos dream of becoming Africa’s model megacity, would also help in transforming the State to a global economic and financial Hub.

"The digital library will provide a repository of contents which include 2,000 study aids on core subjects from primary to senior secondary school curriculum, over 1,600 tutorials, instructional videos and selected e-books for primary to SS3 approved texts, brief history of Lagos State, online forum, podcasts and exam-mate (A Test Resource).

"This portal will be accessible via internet connection on a range of devices, from desktop computers to feature phones regardless of location, age or social economic status,” he said.

He said as part of the government's efforts to make the State the next technology hub in Africa,  the “Code Lagos” and “Digital Library” projects were initiated, adding that the Digital Library programme was the first of its kind in the State and one of the largest learning platforms in Africa.

The Governor noted that based on statistics available, Africa is expected to reach 500 million internet users by 2020, majority of whom will access internet through a mobile device.

He, therefore, urged students, researchers and everyone interested in knowledge acquisition to make use of the platform which can be accessed from any part of the State and country.

Earlier in his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr Obafela Bank-Olemoh said part of the innovation of the present administration was the introduction of "library initiative" whereby private organisations can adopt a library and improve it.

According to him, the initiative was already yielding fruits with the library at Herbert Macaulay, Yaba and the one at Isolo already taken up by corporate organisations.

The representative of the Governor later logged on to the "" portal to formally unveil the programme at the event which also attracted members of the Organised Private Sector and the Diplomatic Corps.

Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode on Thursday advised mothers and mothers-to-be, to do all within their powers to prevent malaria rather than cure it.

She gave the advice when she visited the mother of triplets, Mrs. Segun Akinmosin, at the Epe General Hospital, on the occasion of the 2017 World Malaria Day, which had the theme, “A Push for Prevention”.

According to her, this year’s theme was a clear demonstration that prevention was cheaper and far better than cure, just as she advocated the use of insecticide treated nets, which was most effective in preventing malaria, accounting for an estimated 69 percent of cases prevented through control tools.

Mrs. Ambode noted that the administration in the state places the health needs of Lagosians on priority list, adding that maternal health would continue to be a priority, while also advising mothers and their children to sleep under treated nets.

She disclosed that the inclusion of mosquito nets aside other baby items in the gifts packs for the new borns was a deliberate, life-saving malaria prevention technique.

The representative of the Medical Director of Epe General Hospital, Dr. Jolaosho Adekunle and parents of the triplets, Mr. and Mrs. Segun Akinmosin, expressed appreciation to the wife of the Governor, stressing that her largesse couldn’t have come at a better time.

Since 2000, malaria’s prevention has played an important role in reducing cases and deaths, primarily through the scale up of insecticide treated nets and indoor spraying with insecticides.

World Malaria Day was established in May 2007 by the 60th Session of the World Health Assembly, a decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO). It is an occasion to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained political commitment, to support countries in their efforts to control and eliminate malaria, as well as provide education and understanding on malaria.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is shining a spotlight on prevention, a critical strategy for reducing the toll of a disease that continues to kill more people annually.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in keeping to its vision of making Lagos State One of the Top Ten Preferred Destination for Tourism and Entertainment in Africa has continued to engage in programs and events set at achieving the vision in the last two years. It therefore gives me great pleasure to be here to render an account of our stewardship and achievements in commemoration of the Second year in office of His Excellency, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, the Governor of Lagos State.

In terms of organisational efficiency, the dream for achieving the desired goal can only be met with the accommodation of arts, culture and tourism responsibilities under same ministry.Hence, the creation of a full-fledged Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture confirms the importance the Administration attaches to the sector and demonstrate readiness to tap into the huge benefits and socio-economic potentials in the creative industry.

As set out in the objectives, the Ministry through the combined efforts and contribution of its departments, units and agencies under its supervision, was able to accomplish the following within 2 years of the Administration of His Excellency Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, the Governor of Lagos State.

The Ministry recognized the importance of strategic branding of destinations to the development of tourism and is exploiting the identified benefits of destination branding.

By registering the “One Lagos” “Love Lagos” and the “One Lagos Fiesta” brands at the trademarks registry. The “one Lagos” brand which is the master brand for Lagos is packaged to showcase the true spirit of Lagos through different creative expressions while leveraging on the City’s abundant soft” power to reverse the negative conversation often associated with Lagos; reinvigorate tourism across the state by celebrating our unique people, places and heritage and positively promote Lagos as the Destination in Africa. The “One Lagos” brand was launched formally in July 2016. The launch will ensure the promotion and development of the Culture of Entertainment, Arts and Leisure in the State.

In line with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and culture’s vision of making Lagos State one of the preferred Tourist Destination in Africa, the Lagos State Government in conjunction with WhiteStar held the maiden edition of The Lagos Street Party on the 3rd and 4th of December 2016 at Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The two-day street Party featured live musical performances, comedy, dance sessions and diverse cuisine and creative indigenous games were showcased for the audience. The event also focused on fostering commerce by providing young entrepreneurs the opportunity to sell their goods at the event. A major component of the event was the exhibition of various artworks and artefacts produced by young talented artists drawn from various secondary schools and tertiary institutions in Lagos State.

In its bid to use entertainment to promote tourism and to ensure that all parts of the State feel the impact of the New Year Countdown, the present administration conceptualize hosting the event in the five divisions of the State.

The State redeveloped the countdown model and use the platform to turn the entire state into one community; celebrating change and the achievements of the past year with a strong expression of hope for the New Year.

The entire citizenry of our dear State exhibited unlimited pride for being the entertainment hub of sub-Saharan Africa with an eight-day show laced with flamboyant multi-cultural expressions across the five divisions of the State. The customized stages inscribed with location names – Agege, Ikorodu, Epe, Lagos and Badagry, resonate with beautiful lighting designs and sounds of joy and happiness. Lagosians were treated to an all-inclusive series of events including music, food, drinks, comedy, dance and theatre, and Talent Hunt competition to discover and develop young and talented artist for spanning from the 24th to 31st of December  2016, till the early hours of 1stJanuary, 2017.

Over (50) renowned major artistes and hundreds of aspiring artist performed for over (500) hours in a “one community, one celebration and one purpose” approach. The expanded venue format, infusion of cultural elements of the communities and creation of socio-economic opportunities beyond the Lagos metropolis, threw up unprecedented economic gains as artisans were engaged, food and snacks vendors and consumer brands thrived in areas earlier considered unprofitable.

The fiesta was planned, managed and executed by team of professionals in the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture and supporting MDA’s within the State’s Civil service structure.

I seize this opportunity to thank our sponsors most especially the Nigerian Breweries Plc, Globacom, Pepsi, Mikano and DSTV for their support and partnership in making the Y2016 One Lagos Fiesta a success story.

In February 2016, His Excellency the Governor of Lagos State inaugurated a Committee of 12 members headed by Professor Wole Soyinka and Late Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi. The Committee began the Countdown to the 50thAnniversary of the creation of the State on 27thMay 2016 and series of colloquia and divisional activities were held to celebrate the rich history and culture of the state.

The celebration of the last 50 days countdown to 27th May 2017 however commenced on the 8th of April 2017 with the Musical Stage Play WAKAA. The celebration emphasizes the need to showcase and harness the creative talents in arts, craft, culture and entertainment industry to promote economic growth and development.

This is in line with the main focus of the golden jubilee anniversary, which is to take stock of the outstanding developments achieved by the state in all spheres in the past five decades and to use this as the basis to chart the parts for future economic and all round development of the state recognizing the diversity of its citizenry and preserving its history and heritage.

Monuments have been created for thousands of years and they are often the most durable and famous symbols of ancient civilization. Monuments are also structures that are explicitly created to commemorate a person or event or which has become important to a social group as a part of their remembrance of historic times or cultural heritage.

A good monument must be visible and appreciated not only by the indigenous people but also by tourist and visitors.

The Ministry has continued to install new and maintain all existing heritage and historical monuments in the state. Much importance is placed on the sustenance of the cultural and historical heritage of the people of Lagos State and to attract tourists. Some of the monuments that depict these and received attention are stated as follows:

The historic Tinubu Square fountain was renovated and opened for public use on the 27th of January 2017. The reopening of the fountain located on Broad Street in the heart of Lagos Central Business District in honor of Madam Tinubu has provided a world class recreation facility befitting the foremost business precinct in Nigeria.

The statue of King Ado, the first crowned king of Lagos, was unveiled at Moloney street, behind Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos on the 6thof February, 2017. Prince Ado is reputed to have named Lagos Island, Eko. He reigned between 1630 to 1669. King Ado was the son of Prince Ashipa, A warrior that came to Lagos from Benin. On arrival in Lagos, Ashipa met Prince Olofin and his people, and there was a long period of war between the two of them until death of Olofin. Ado the son of Ashipa later became the First King of Lagos. He was succeeded by his son Gabaro, who was succeeded by Akinsemoyin and the ascension to the throne of Oba of Lagos has remained in his linage ever since.

The legendary Prince Olofin Atekoye, referred to as the first migrant from Ile- Ife the cradle of the Yorubas to settle in Lagos. He was the grandson of Oduduwa a powerful hunter, warrior and a renowned blacksmith. The shrine of Olofin Atekoye still exists at Iddo where he first settled. The Children of Prince Olofin are today known as IDEJO’S who are the popular white cap chiefs of Lagos. The statue was also unveiled on the 6th of February, 2017 at Ijora, Olopa, Ido, Lagos.

The two monument sites will serve as destinations for tourists in need of historical information about Lagos heritage and enrich their knowledge of the Arts and Culture of the people of Lagos State.

MA’AMI STATUE (Muri Okunola Park, Victoria Island)

This abstract monument projects the motherhood affection that exist between a mother and her child. As depicted in the title, this sculpture focuses on the cry of the child, demanding for the loving attention of the mother. This love and attention is deliberately expressed in the flow of forms as structure of the child flows into the mother figure, while the mother is seen holding firmly unto her child. In the midst of all this love and tenderness displayed by the mother, the sculpture also projects pride, firmness, authority of the mother guiding, protecting and caring for her child. In our society, mothers are known to have very passionate affection for their children, while children are strongly attached to their mothers. This monument is an expression of the profound importance our society attaches to motherhood and care of our children.

OJULOGE STATUE (front of the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu, Apapa)

Meaning the beauty of an African woman. An iconic monument of a Lagos woman and her contribution to the economic development of Lagos State. This monument is in honour of the much talked about Lagos Women (Sisi Eko). It celebrates and conveys the sense of beauty, grace, style and passion for fashion of a Lagos woman. The curve forms projects the femininity of the sculpture, the provocative posture and angles expresses elegance, sophistication and stylishness.

Today there is so much talk around the world about violence against women and gender abuse, but this monument tells the world that, in the culture and heritage of the people of Lagos State, we indeed appreciate, respect and celebrate our women. Culturally we see our women as dignified and accord them the respect they deserve while celebrating their beauty

Gentlemen of the Press, in line with our urban renewal focus and the desire to provide only the best for Lagos State, the Ministry has embarked on reconstruction of some monuments for better appreciation of the intended reason for which they were erected.

The monument will replace the existing statueof Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola at the popular Abiola Garden located towards Alapere along the Lagos Ibadan expressway.  The location provides a wider garden for tourists, visitors and Lagosians for picnic and relaxation. The New Statue is of international standard and an imposing world class sculpture.

Late Chief MKO Abiola as we all know was a Nigerian philanthropist, businessman andpolitician.  The monument celebrates the icon of the annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential election in Nigeria.

The statue of the Nigeria foremost human right lawyer, activist, philanthropist and one of the icons of pro-democracy movement in Nigeria is also slated for replacement by a bigger statue at the same location in Ojota

ON-GOING PROJECTS
As part of the effort to immortalize the contribution of past leaders of the state and enrich the history and heritage of our dear state, a park to be named JJT Monument is presently under construction opposite the state House Of Assembly.

JJT Park was conceptualized to honour three past Governors of the state i.e Brigadier Mobolaji Johnson (Rtd) the first Military Governor, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande the first Civilian Governor and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu the Visionary Leader behind the rapid development that had been achieved in Lagos State in the past 18 years.

The concepts involves production and erection of rock sculpture of the three past Governors made of polystyrene core and other finishing.

The three bursts will be mounted on a pedestal with wide steps leading to a platform for visitors and tourist to stand and take pictures.

In furtherance of the Ministry’s strategy to enhance the aesthetic beauty of our State and deepen our commitment to the creative industry, group of artistes were commissioned to design, produce and erect world class iconic work of arts as monuments in strategic locations across the five divisions of Lagos State. A total of 19 of such work of arts are presently at various places.

The genuine VOICE of Ikorodu Division

Wednesday, 19 April 2017

Business will cease to be as usual, where wrong persons have been occupying the number one seat in our Local Councils in Ikorodu Division, hence the lack of creativity, brain drain, retrogression and lack of development of our community.

In fact, capacity building and technical know-how are lacking in various sectors of our division simply because square pegs are often inserted in round holes. Our case has often been repetition of mistakes where we have new wine in an old skin.

Paradoxically, he who plays the pipe dictates the tune. It is high time we stopped the politics of 'chop I chop' which has persistently dragged our Division backward and running potential visionaries aground with mediocrity and lack of vision of some people who are committed to rigging themselves into political offices without attending to the plight of the masses whose vote brought them into respective offices.

However, the people of this Division are tired of the political clandestine of running the affairs of the local governments which is adversely affecting the growth and development of our community. Hence, the need to properly scrutinise anyone seeking any public office to enable us field credible candidate who will take us to our eldorado.

Furthermore, for the purpose of setting the record straight in Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, our media organisation (Igbogbo/Baiyeku Info Magazine) is working assiduously on a programme in which every aspiring candidates shall appear to present and defend his manifesto; this I hope will be emulated in other Local Councils that formed Ikorodu Division.

We need to make whoever will lead us to be accountable and where they are erring, they should be shown the way out. Enough of all forms of hooliganism, thuggery, mediocrity and all manner of political arrogance being showcased in the past by some of our public office holders who have no intention of transforming our community, but whose minds are corrupted with the 'get rich quick syndrome'.

Similarly, It might interest you to know that a nation that is built on falsehood is bound to fail. During electioneering campaigns, lots of promises are fabricated and are corroborated with fallacious claims to make them appear real. Our Division ought to have gone beyond the level It is today.

If we continue the practice of imposing candidate on the people, the adverse effect of this is tantamount to a systematic assassination of our future generations. We just must get it right this time and failure to achieve this; we may never recover from it for the next 50years when our legacy would be questioned by the posterity.

We should endeavour to work in alliance with the likes of Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Basorun, Asipa Kaoli Olusanya, Chief Adenrele Olowu and other great political leaders in Ikorodu Division in order to have credible and acceptable candidates of the people.

In addition, Igbogbo/Baiyeku Info Magazine, which happens to be the genuine VOICE of Ikorodu Division has been equipped, fortified and strategically informed to engage all the aspiring candidates in Ikorodu Division in an interview and the outcome of which will be collated and published before the Local Government Election.

Finally, all hands must be on deck to elect our credible leaders with vision and passion in order to move Ikorodu Division forward. We must jointly resist any form of intimidation and threat emanating from imposition of candidates. We must not sell the future of our generations for a cup of rice and stipend that are freely distributed by politicians in order to buy the conscience of the people. Remember the Latin maxim which says, "Volenti non fit injuria" you cannot complain to the injury you consented to. If you aid the wrong person into the office today, you should be prepared to bear the brunt because he will make life unbearable for you. Be wise and choose wisely!!

Security operatives from the Lagos State Police Command deployed to the riverine area of the Ishawo Community in Ikorodu area of the State on Wednesday commenced total demolition of illegal waterfront shanties within the creeks where criminal elements hibernate to perpetrate their nefarious activities.

The State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni who briefed journalists in Ishawo on the ongoing operations in the creeks by a combined team of the State Marine Police, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), mobile policemen and the men from the anti-kidnapping squad in coordination with the local vigilante group, said 13 suspected kidnappers have already been arrested and are currently aiding the team to track down the remaining suspects still on the run.

It would be recalled that two weeks ago, four Police Officers and one Army Captain lost their lives after an ambush unleashed on them by suspected militants in Ishawo area.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, while condoling with the families and loved ones of the departed officers, had assured that every perpetrator directly or remotely linked to the dastardly act would be brought to justice in the shortest possible time.

Owoseni said that the Governor immediately ordered a joint operation to hunt down the perpetrators, adding that the operation was yielding positive results.

“So far so good following the attack that occurred at Ishawo where we lost four of our policemen and army captain, we have deployed operatives in the water. What you have seen now is for us to appraise what we have been doing for the past one week. So, quality arrests have been made and we are talking to them because the arrests that were made we believe that we get some evidential value from them, so they are talking to us, at least that makes us to know who we are looking for so that we won’t be just wild catching,” Owoseni said.

The Commissioner of Police who was joined on the inspection of the joint operation to the den of the militants in Ishawo Creeks by the Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Mr. Tunji Disu, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Habib Aruna, security squad leaders and some journalists, said the visit was to appraise the work done so far and the next line of action.

“Earlier this morning, they were able to get to the proper camps of these criminal elements where they saw some of them cooking food who fled immediately they saw the combined team. We just feel that we should take a decision to destroy the camps. The destruction of the camps are ongoing, that is why we are here and the officers that are handling the destruction of the camps, they are right inside the creeks now and at the end of the day, they would share the story as they finish that operations, but our movement here is just for you to see the terrain and see what the security operatives are facing with regards to policing this environment and that is why we are clamouring for the destruction of these shanties”, Owoseni said.

Owoseni said that one of the suspected militants died during a fierce encounter with the Intelligence Response team of the Inspector General of Police, assuring residents in the area that they would go all out to ensure that they fish out all criminal elements in the State.
“We still want to assure members of the public that these people have murdered sleep and they will not sleep, we will make sure that all of them are rooted out and that they face the full wrath of the law.

“The 13 suspects we have, we are interrogating them and they are making useful statements for us and we are making progress and you can see that helicopter surveillance is also supporting all what we are doing but we want to assure members of the public around this axis that the government is ready, the security agents are ready to ensure that we put an end to the madness of these criminal elements,” the Commissioner of Police said.

He said the Police have gathered necessary information on the perpetrators still on the run, assuring that one by one, they would be arrested and be made to face the full wrath of the law.

He commended the synergy of the combined efforts of the security operatives, just as he added that the efforts of the local vigilante groups who are familiar with the terrain was critical to the operation especially in aiding to navigate the hideouts of the militants.

“I want use this opportunity to thank the civilian men that have decided to join us and take us to navigate the water and also give us a lead to the centre of activities which is the creek where these criminal elements have been hibernating,” Owoseni said.

Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Southwest geo-political zone, Foluso Adebanjo on Wednesday commended the security arrangement in Lagos State, urging other States to adopt the synergy among security agencies in the State.

Addressing journalists at Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja shortly after a courtesy visit to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, the police boss said the collaboration among security agencies in the State was worthy of emulation specifically with respect to stemming the tide of increase in crime rate.

Adebanjo, who is also in charge of Information Communication Technology (ICT) at the force headquarters, said the meeting with the Governor was part of engagement with strategic stakeholders to enhance security, saying that it was important for all actors to partner to scale up the security architecture of the State.

He said: “The IGP has directed that all DIGs should go to their respective geo-political zones to assess the crime situation and to proffer solutions. Yesterday, I met with community leaders and then all the police officers from the Commissioner of Police to Area Commanders and the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 2 was also there. We had people from our Eminent Persons’ Forum and the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC). All the stakeholders were there and I also met with the Military including service Commanders.

“The purpose is just to see what is happening in this State and see what we can do to enhance relationship and partnership which is very key.

“Lagos has been blessed with good heads of security agencies. The CP of Lagos is doing his best. I met with the service Commanders, the DSS and others and I can confirm that they are doing a very good job. Lagos is a place to be emulated because there is so much synergy among the security agencies,” Adebanjo said.

The DIG, who briefed journalists alongside the AIG Zone 2, Adamu Ibrahim and the Lagos CP, Fatai Owoseni, also counselled police officers to always carry out their duties without harassing the people.

“As Police officers, our duty is to serve and protect the people who are actually our boss. It is from the taxes that people pay that we are paid and so we must show respect and restraint and we can do our job without being harsh on the people.

“Nigerians are not criminals. Criminals will be dealt with when they commit any offence and we can do our work with human face,” he said.

Besides, the police boss advised people with criminal intents to stay away from Lagos and the southwest zone as there would be no room for them to operate.

“My message for criminal elements is simple and I just want them to know that they cannot escape. If you commit any crime in Lagos State, you will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. I can assure the people of that,” Adebanjo said.
