WORLD MALARIA DAY: AMBODE’S WIFE TASKS MOTHERS ON PREVENTION | Shakiru Seidu

Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode on Thursday advised mothers and mothers-to-be, to do all within their powers to prevent malaria rather than cure it.

She gave the advice when she visited the mother of triplets, Mrs. Segun Akinmosin, at the Epe General Hospital, on the occasion of the 2017 World Malaria Day, which had the theme, “A Push for Prevention”.

According to her, this year’s theme was a clear demonstration that prevention was cheaper and far better than cure, just as she advocated the use of insecticide treated nets, which was most effective in preventing malaria, accounting for an estimated 69 percent of cases prevented through control tools.

Mrs. Ambode noted that the administration in the state places the health needs of Lagosians on priority list, adding that maternal health would continue to be a priority, while also advising mothers and their children to sleep under treated nets.

She disclosed that the inclusion of mosquito nets aside other baby items in the gifts packs for the new borns was a deliberate, life-saving malaria prevention technique.

The representative of the Medical Director of Epe General Hospital, Dr. Jolaosho Adekunle and parents of the triplets, Mr. and Mrs. Segun Akinmosin, expressed appreciation to the wife of the Governor, stressing that her largesse couldn’t have come at a better time.

Since 2000, malaria’s prevention has played an important role in reducing cases and deaths, primarily through the scale up of insecticide treated nets and indoor spraying with insecticides.

World Malaria Day was established in May 2007 by the 60th Session of the World Health Assembly, a decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO). It is an occasion to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained political commitment, to support countries in their efforts to control and eliminate malaria, as well as provide education and understanding on malaria.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is shining a spotlight on prevention, a critical strategy for reducing the toll of a disease that continues to kill more people annually.

Monuments are also structures that are explicitly created to commemorate a person or event or which has become important to a social group as a part of their remembrance of historic times or cultural heritage.

A good monument must be visible and appreciated not only by the indigenous people but also by tourist and visitors.

The Ministry has continued to install new and maintain all existing heritage and historical monuments in the state. Much importance is placed on the sustenance of the cultural and historical heritage of the people of Lagos State and to attract tourists. LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION - A NEED TO ELECT CREDIBLE CANDIDATES IN IKORODU DIVISION. By: Shakiru Seidu

Business will cease to be as usual, where wrong persons have been occupying the number one seat in our Local Councils in Ikorodu Division, hence the lack of creativity, brain drain, retrogression and lack of development of our community.

In fact, capacity building and technical know-how are lacking in various sectors of our division simply because square pegs are often inserted in round holes. Our case has often been repetition of mistakes where we have new wine in an old skin.

Paradoxically, he who plays the pipe dictates the tune. It is high time we stopped the politics of 'chop I chop' which has persistently dragged our Division backward and running potential visionaries aground with mediocrity and lack of vision of some people who are committed to rigging themselves into political offices without attending to the plight of the masses whose vote brought them into respective offices.

However, the people of this Division are tired of the political clandestine of running the affairs of the local governments which is adversely affecting the growth and development of our community. Hence, the need to properly scrutinise anyone seeking any public office to enable us field credible candidate who will take us to our eldorado.

Furthermore, for the purpose of setting the record straight in Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, our media organisation (Igbogbo/Baiyeku Info Magazine) is working assiduously on a programme in which every aspiring candidates shall appear to present and defend his manifesto; this I hope will be emulated in other Local Councils that formed Ikorodu Division.

We need to make whoever will lead us to be accountable and where they are erring, they should be shown the way out. Enough of all forms of hooliganism, thuggery, mediocrity and all manner of political arrogance being showcased in the past by some of our public office holders who have no intention of transforming our community, but whose minds are corrupted with the 'get rich quick syndrome'.

Similarly, It might interest you to know that a nation that is built on falsehood is bound to fail. During electioneering campaigns, lots of promises are fabricated and are corroborated with fallacious claims to make them appear real. Our Division ought to have gone beyond the level It is today.

If we continue the practice of imposing candidate on the people, the adverse effect of this is tantamount to a systematic assassination of our future generations. We just must get it right this time and failure to achieve this; we may never recover from it for the next 50years when our legacy would be questioned by the posterity.

We should endeavour to work in alliance with the likes of Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Basorun, Asipa Kaoli Olusanya, Chief Adenrele Olowu and other great political leaders in Ikorodu Division in order to have credible and acceptable candidates of the people.

In addition, Igbogbo/Baiyeku Info Magazine, which happens to be the genuine VOICE of Ikorodu Division has been equipped, fortified and strategically informed to engage all the aspiring candidates in Ikorodu Division in an interview and the outcome of which will be collated and published before the Local Government Election.

Finally, all hands must be on deck to elect our credible leaders with vision and passion in order to move Ikorodu Division forward. We must jointly resist any form of intimidation and threat emanating from imposition of candidates. We must not sell the future of our generations for a cup of rice and stipend that are freely distributed by politicians in order to buy the conscience of the people. Remember the Latin maxim which says, "Volenti non fit injuria" you cannot complain to the injury you consented to. If you aid the wrong person into the office today, you should be prepared to bear the brunt because he will make life unbearable for you. Be wise and choose wisely!!

It would be recalled that two weeks ago, four Police Officers and one Army Captain lost their lives after an ambush unleashed on them by suspected militants in Ishawo area.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, while condoling with the families and loved ones of the departed officers, had assured that every perpetrator directly or remotely linked to the dastardly act would be brought to justice in the shortest possible time.

Owoseni said that the Governor immediately ordered a joint operation to hunt down the perpetrators, adding that the operation was yielding positive results.

“So far so good following the attack that occurred at Ishawo where we lost four of our policemen and army captain, we have deployed operatives in the water. What you have seen now is for us to appraise what we have been doing for the past one week. So, quality arrests have been made and we are talking to them because the arrests that were made we believe that we get some evidential value from them, so they are talking to us, at least that makes us to know who we are looking for so that we won’t be just wild catching,” Owoseni said.

The Commissioner of Police who was joined on the inspection of the joint operation to the den of the militants in Ishawo Creeks by the Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Mr. Tunji Disu, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Habib Aruna, security squad leaders and some journalists, said the visit was to appraise the work done so far and the next line of action.

“Earlier this morning, they were able to get to the proper camps of these criminal elements where they saw some of them cooking food who fled immediately they saw the combined team. We just feel that we should take a decision to destroy the camps. The destruction of the camps are ongoing, that is why we are here and the officers that are handling the destruction of the camps, they are right inside the creeks now and at the end of the day, they would share the story as they finish that operations, but our movement here is just for you to see the terrain and see what the security operatives are facing with regards to policing this environment and that is why we are clamouring for the destruction of these shanties”, Owoseni said.

Owoseni said that one of the suspected militants died during a fierce encounter with the Intelligence Response team of the Inspector General of Police, assuring residents in the area that they would go all out to ensure that they fish out all criminal elements in the State.
“We still want to assure members of the public that these people have murdered sleep and they will not sleep, we will make sure that all of them are rooted out and that they face the full wrath of the law.

“The 13 suspects we have, we are interrogating them and they are making useful statements for us and we are making progress and you can see that helicopter surveillance is also supporting all what we are doing but we want to assure members of the public around this axis that the government is ready, the security agents are ready to ensure that we put an end to the madness of these criminal elements,” the Commissioner of Police said.

He said the Police have gathered necessary information on the perpetrators still on the run, assuring that one by one, they would be arrested and be made to face the full wrath of the law.

He commended the synergy of the combined efforts of the security operatives, just as he added that the efforts of the local vigilante groups who are familiar with the terrain was critical to the operation especially in aiding to navigate the hideouts of the militants.

“I want use this opportunity to thank the civilian men that have decided to join us and take us to navigate the water and also give us a lead to the centre of activities which is the creek where these criminal elements have been hibernating,” Owoseni said.

ADOPT SYNERGY AMONG SECURITY AGENCIES IN LAGOS, DIG URGES STATES | Shakiru Seidu …Warns Criminals To Stay Away From State

Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Southwest geo-political zone, Foluso Adebanjo on Wednesday commended the security arrangement in Lagos State, urging other States to adopt the synergy among security agencies in the State.

Addressing journalists at Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja shortly after a courtesy visit to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, the police boss said the collaboration among security agencies in the State was worthy of emulation specifically with respect to stemming the tide of increase in crime rate.

Adebanjo, who is also in charge of Information Communication Technology (ICT) at the force headquarters, said the meeting with the Governor was part of engagement with strategic stakeholders to enhance security, saying that it was important for all actors to partner to scale up the security architecture of the State.

He said: “The IGP has directed that all DIGs should go to their respective geo-political zones to assess the crime situation and to proffer solutions. Yesterday, I met with community leaders and then all the police officers from the Commissioner of Police to Area Commanders and the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 2 was also there. We had people from our Eminent Persons’ Forum and the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC). All the stakeholders were there and I also met with the Military including service Commanders.

“The purpose is just to see what is happening in this State and see what we can do to enhance relationship and partnership which is very key.

“Lagos has been blessed with good heads of security agencies. The CP of Lagos is doing his best. I met with the service Commanders, the DSS and others and I can confirm that they are doing a very good job. Lagos is a place to be emulated because there is so much synergy among the security agencies,” Adebanjo said.

The DIG, who briefed journalists alongside the AIG Zone 2, Adamu Ibrahim and the Lagos CP, Fatai Owoseni, also counselled police officers to always carry out their duties without harassing the people.

“As Police officers, our duty is to serve and protect the people who are actually our boss. It is from the taxes that people pay that we are paid and so we must show respect and restraint and we can do our job without being harsh on the people.

“Nigerians are not criminals. Criminals will be dealt with when they commit any offence and we can do our work with human face,” he said.

Besides, the police boss advised people with criminal intents to stay away from Lagos and the southwest zone as there would be no room for them to operate.

“My message for criminal elements is simple and I just want them to know that they cannot escape. If you commit any crime in Lagos State, you will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. I can assure the people of that,” Adebanjo said.
