LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT FLAG OFF ADULT LITERACY PROGRAMME AT IGBOGBO/BAIYEKU LCDA. | Shakiru Seidu We'll provide free stationeries for any interested students. -Basorun

The Palace of the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo kingdom was full to capacity on Tuesday, 30th of May, 2017, when it played host to the initiative of the able Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode who is determined to eradicate illiteracy out of Lagos State to the nearest minimum, if not total.

The "Eko Nke Koo" (Lagos is Learning) initiative was launched October last year to tackle the menace of illiteracy in Lagos State, this was in line with the determination of Governor Ambode to lead an inclusive government with an unwavering resolve to build a State that works for all.

The programme was declared open through the prayer said by Sheik Dhikirulahi Andu, the Chief Imam Igbogbo Central Mosque, while the welcome address was given by the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Special Adviser on Education, Dr. Shamsideen Olalekan Allison who was glad with the mass turn out of the people to welcome the gesture of the Governor.

However, when it was time for the goodwill message the Sole Administrator, Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, Chief Mrs. Bolanle Basorun expressed her gratitude and delight of such laudable programme initiated by the Governor for the good people of Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA. She assured the provision of the free stationery for any interested students.

She therefore appreciated the Governor and the Royal fathers, HRM Oba Abdulsemiu Orimadegun Kasali, the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo kingdom and HRM Oba Richard Ogunsanya, the Olubeshe of Ibeshe.

Shortly after this,  the President, CIIDU, Igbogbo, Barrister Adeboye Dankuwo also thanked the Governor for his brilliant ideas and promised that the programme will be given adequate support by CIIDU and the people of Igbogbo kingdom to make sure the objective of the programme will not be defeated.

The Special Adviser to Gov. Ambode on Education, Mr Obafela Bank-Olemoh, thank His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for this initiative and the wonderful support given by the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo.

"Already, we are making remarkable progress towards achieving our goal. Last year, 10,143 neo-literates out of 11,492 who enrolled for the programme graduated successfully, most of which have also enrolled for the vocational education programmes delivered by Lagos State especially through the Agency for Mass Education. We aim to make them more self-reliant and active contributors to the economic well being of the State," he said.

Bank-Olemoh further explained that they have also established 250 new literacy centres to make the programme more accessible to Lagosians. "In January this year, Two Hundred and Fifty (250) new adult facilitators were trained and are already deployed to Literacy centres spread across the State. It’s my pleasure to inform you today that 10 of these new centres are located within Igbogbo town while more centres will be established in coming weeks and months; especially in the rural areas", he added.

He therefore urged the stakeholders in the society, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Faith-Based Organizations, and trade unions as well as market women and mechanic associations, not to leave the responsibility of eradicating illiteracy from Lagos State to the government alone.

There was an interlude of a cultural display by the students of the premier school, Ikorodu, Oriwu Senior Model College which add glamour to the event.

The Director, Agency for Mass Education (AME) and also a proud daughter of Igbogbo, Mrs. Oluwakemi Yetunde Kalesanwo said Igbogbo is the take off point of the programme. She equally intimated everyone that Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode is adequately funding the adult education programme, hence, it is free.

On the final note, the official flag off of the scheme was carried out as the tape was cut by HRM Oba Abdulsemiu Orimadegun Kasali before the official registration of students by Oba Kasali, Oba Ogunsanya, Bank-Olemoh, Mrs Basorun respectively.

Among those that graced the occasion were the traditional rulers, Community Initiative for Igbogbo Development Union (CIIDU), Igbogbo Development Association (IDEA), CDAs, Muslim Community, top government functionaries, Olojas, among others.

A trust fund is a special type of legal entity that holds property for the benefit of another person, group, or organization but in the case of Ijede LCDA, we are not only creating a trust fund, but that which is targeted at complementing State efforts toward funding and ensuring security of lives and property of the good people of Ijede LCDA, he explained.

However, he was so affirmative that certain groups of people living within the community are tarnishing their image thus maligning their progress work in the division. He made it clear that the community will bear the brunt as they often demand for the release of some criminals who are threatening the peace of the people.

'There has not been a single filling station to have given the Police fuel to run their vehicles.' Area Commander further said. He urged the residents of Ikorodu division not to condone the bad elements in the Police force; he obliged them to report any erring officer when necessary. On his final note, he advised the residents not to apply for the bail of any supposed criminal.

Mr Olapade of Neighborhood Watch Ijede LCDA intimated the gathering that documentation of recruitment exercise was in progress but promised that work would commence soon. Mr Akilo suggested the uses of whistle blowing to ensure alertness among residents.

Immediately after this, there was a call for donation on Security Trust Fund which received a lot of acceptance as people were donating generously.

LEAVE LAGOS IF YOU LIKE BRIBE – CP TELLS DPOs

Lagos State Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, on Tuesday warned Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in the state police command to shun bribery or leave the state.

Owoseni stated this during a lecture on Code of Conduct for Law Enforcement Officers at the Police Officers’ Wives’ Association (POWA) Hall, Ikeja.

He warned that the era of impunity and corruption among cops was gone, appealing to his subordinates to come for transfer if they would not want to play by the rules in the state.

He said: “I am tired of hearing about shooting or killing of innocent persons. No one has the right to take another man’s life. It is only God that has the right to take life.

“It is your responsibility as a DPO to know those who are collecting bribe under you. If you refuse to stop them, they will stop you from being a DPO.

“It is embarrassing to see policemen collecting bribes and chasing yahoo yahoo boys for a DPO. I would not cover any DPO. I will expose you. Just leave Lagos before I get to your station. I cannot share out of your misconduct. I will give your photographs and details to journalists to expose you.

“I am shocked to hear that some Area Commanders and DPOs are on the pay rolls of fraudsters. I am investigating. Just pray that I don’t get you. Just know that you are causing pains for taxpayers if you are intimidating them and collecting bribe from criminals.

“It is a curse to build a house with the money. The building would collapse on your head. Some of you even take people to the bank to collect money. If you train your children with the money, they won’t be useful to you.

“If those who were in the force before us bastardized it, we would not have the opportunity to be enlisted in the police. I am tired of pleading with police victims because you are doing what you are not supposed to do. Remember, one day, you are going to die and give account to your creator.

“Go back to your areas of jurisdiction and warn your men against brutality, indiscriminate use of handcuffs on pregnant women, elders and persons with disability.

“Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) should take note. I will not tolerate any act of indiscipline.

“Learn a lesson from DPO Ijeshatedo, who shot dead a fashion designer. He is in our custody and we are compiling charges against him. He would soon be arraigned in court.

“All DPOs in Ikorodu should use all resources within their disposals to fish out Badoo cult group that has been causing havoc in the community. I am giving you all 48 hours to decongest your cells. Nobody should be detained more than 48 hours. I will conduct checks on the cells.”

LAGOS STATE GREATNESS LIES IN ITS MELTING POT FOR ALL CULTURES - AMBODE ...Claim Of Lagos Being No Man's Land Misleading, Confrontational - Akiolu, Fasinro, Okunnu

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday attributed the greatness of the State to its ability to be the melting pot for all cultures, just as he said that the people of the State over the years have distinguished themselves in making others feel home away from home.

Speaking at the Lagos History Lecture held at Eko Hotels and Suits with the theme: "Lagos: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow," as part of activities marking Golden Jubilee anniversary of the State, Governor Ambode recalled that since inception, Lagos had effectively transited from an administrative entity to become the melting point of cultures and the socio-political and economic jurisdiction of global significance, rated today, as the fifth largest economy in Africa.

He described the lecture as an opportunity to have an introspection into the past, engage in an objective appraisal of the present and, a realistic prognosis of the future of another fifty years.

He said such necessitated the assemblage of knowledgeable royal fathers, elder statesmen, jurists of distinction and Lagos indigenes of repute to trace the history of the State and proffer insights as to the areas to concentrate on for the future.

Going down memory lane, Governor Ambode said: "It is important for us at this epochal gathering to refresh our memory about the beginning; the journey of how the AWORI played an important role in the evolution of what we call Lagos today:

"The same applies to the evolution of the EKO Royalty with the coming of the Bini from present day Edo State and even the momentous role played by the TAPPA in the making of our dear State.

"Our greatness is in our ability to be the melting pot for all cultures and as at today, there is no tribe in Nigeria that is not represented in Lagos. From the Hausa/Fulani to the Igbo to the Kanuri to the Ibibio, the Nupe, the Berom, the Igala and so on and so forth all have spaces to live and live well in our dear State.

"Lagos is not just national in outlook. It is international. The Americans are here; the British are here; South Africans are in their thousands; the Chinese are not in short supply; and the Indians even have a community in Lagos.

"With all sense of modesty, there is no other State like Lagos in Nigeria. Some may say we owe this to the fact that Lagos used to be a Federal Capital Territory. But I really do not think so. While that may have contributed to our greatness, we are also a unique people ready to make fellow human-beings from other lands feel home away from home," the Governor said.

While noting the progress which Lagos had witnessed politically, socially and economically, Governor Ambode said he was certain that the progenitors of the State would be happy in their graves with the tremendous progress in all spheres of governance that have elatedly become the lots of the State.

In his keynote lecture, Professor Hakeem Danmole traced the history of Lagos since the inception, saying that it was commendable that the legacy of achievement has been sustained in the State.

Going foward, Danmole, who is the Dean, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, said the State must strictly adhere to rules and regulations, adding that for Lagos to reach greater heights, developmental plan must be followed.

While calling on the Federal Government to collaborate with the State Government to fast-track development in Lagos, Danmole urged the State Government to fully utilize its God's given environment especially in area of water transportation.

Responding to a call by Governor Ambode for the notion of Lagos being a no man's land to be addressed, first Town Clark of the Lagos City Council, Senator Habib Fasinro and former Minister of Works, Alhaji Femi Okunnu (SAN) said those behind such claim were ignorant.

They said such claim was not only misleading but confrontational, as same abused the history of the indiginous people of Lagos such as the Aworis, Egbas, Binis, Ijeshas, Nupes, Brazilian returnees, among others.

On his part, Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu corroborated Fasinro and Okunnu, and urged the National Assembly to reconsider the motion to grant special status to Lagos, saying doing so would be in best interest of Nigeria.

WE’LL RESIST ANY COUP ATTEMPT, TINUBU VOWS …Ambode Hails Lawmakers As Assembly Holds Session For Lagos@50

National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday called on the Military to perish any attempt to lure it to stage a coup against the democratic process, vowing that such attempt would be vehemently resisted.

Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai had recently revealed that some military officers were hobnobbing with politicians ostensibly to overthrow the present democratically elected government.

But speaking at a Special Parliamentary Session organised by the Lagos State House of Assembly to mark the Lagos@50 celebrations and the second anniversary of the 8th Assembly, Tinubu advised those behind the attempt to truncate the democratic which Nigerians fought hard for should perish such idea in their best interest.

He said: “But amidst the celebration, I will like to sound a caution to us all the precious thing we have – democracy that we are now trying to perfect is not guaranteed to us. We must sweat hard yet think wisely if we are to keep it.  There will always be some people who want to undermine democracy. These people gain more from the government in the dark.

“Just a few days ago, we had a warning that some people were trying to entice the military out of the barracks. I say don’t try it. I want to add my voice to that warning. Those who think they can break the democracy so many of us labored and for which too many people died, sacrificed their lives, they are sure mistaken.

“Nigeria has come too far for such a thing to happen. Those people behind such idea will find no fertile ground to plant their seed in Lagos. We will not buy their bad product; whatever they want to sell is a bad product and we are going to reject it. We tell them, move away from here because Lagos State will resist it, Lagos State is saying move away from it, don’t think about it, we are all staying together to grow our democracy,” Tinubu said.

Speaking on the Lagos@50 celebrations, Tinubu said going by achievements recorded in the last five decades, there were so much reasons to celebrate, but that in the midst of the celebration, it was important to place emphasis on the need to create more opportunities for the people.

“We also have realized that we need to do more in order to create more opportunities, better education, improved housing and more jobs for many of our people so that all can witness the full blossom of growth and prosperity,” he said.

Also speaking, Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode said since creation, the State had been a shining example and critical hub of socio-economic and political development, saying that the harmonious relationship between the three arms of government in Nigeria which is reflective in the governance model of Lagos State promoted the interest and welfare of the people.

“Today, we are celebrating the contributions of the Lagos State House of Assembly, particularly the 8th Assembly in the last two years, to the true principles of democratic governance through passage of Bills that advance the principle of governance and promotion of social welfare of the people within the ambits of the Law.

“It is on record that military incursion into governance has always made the legislature its first victim by suspending the constitution with all powers against the wishes of our people. Therefore, the Legislature can be said to be the most exposed in governance model in the current democratic dispensation, if we have to give its true meaning and relevance in a representative government,” he said.

Governor Ambode added that in spite of this chequered history, the first to eighth Assemblies of the Lagos State House of Assembly had been the benchmark for assessing legislative business in governance of the Nigerian State, stressing that the 8th Assembly, in particular had been highly responsive and innovative in fulfilling its constitutional obligations and meeting the aspirations of our people for the dividends of democracy.

“The superlative performance of the 8th Assembly, including previous Assemblies, can be attributed to the quality of leadership that has been produced through a matured and democratic process with the purpose of providing a democratic process that would benefit our people.

“Over the years, the Legislative arm of government in Lagos State has been a shining beacon of democratic independence and responsiveness. It has never shirked its assigned role or responsibility even in the face of provocation. It has continuously engaged the electorate in the process of making laws through interactive engagements and contributions to the making of Laws,” he said.
